On June 27, 2023, the Medication Access and Treatment Expansion (MATE) Act formally went into effect. This new Federal Law established by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, mandates that anyone, other than a veterinarian, under state law licensed to prescribe controlled substances and/or who holds a DEA license – including physicians, dentists, chiropractors, podiatrists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants – must complete a one-time eight-hour course on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders and the safe pharmacological management of pain. Applicants are required to affirm they have completed 8 hours of education that meets criteria established by the new MATE Act. If the applicant cannot affirm they have completed the educational requirement, the applicant will not be able to complete the application process. The highly specific content has been created utilizing the SAMHSA Established Objectives for the MATE Act DEA course. It is NOT repurposed content that has been pulled from the archives and cobbled together like some organizations have done. Not only do we want you to be able to renew your DEA license, but we also want to provide you with the tools to enable you to manage your patients with addiction/Substance Use Disorders effectively.
